A stone’s throw from Berlin, along the Havel River, the city of Potsdam is surrounded by a
beautiful landscape of lakes, fields and forests. Since the late 17th Century, members of the
Hohenzollern Royal Family carefully sculpted this landscape into a relaxing retreat. Following great
reconstruction efforts in the past decade, Potsdam has regained its glamour and beauty. Our tour
of Potsdam examines the numerous castles, the fascinating history, as well as the attrative gardens
and landscapes of this royal escape.

  Selected Highlights:
  • Sanssouci Palace, the favored home of Frederick the Great, the eccentric leader that placed Prussia on the map as a domi-
nant European power. So great was the influence of Frederick's personal taste in the design and decoration of Sanssouci
Palace that its style is characterized as "Frederician Rococo." Find out about the quirks of Frederick’s behavior, his heated
relationship with the French philosopher Voltaire, and the tale of his delayed burial alongside his beloved dogs.

  • New Garden, the unique project of King Friedrich Wilhelm II, the decadent heir of Frederick the Great. A breathtaking walk,
discover the Orangerie, the Marble Palace, hidden churches and architectural details, as well as the Cecilienhof Palace,
designed for the son of Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War I, and the site of the Potsdam Conference at the close of World War
     War II.

  • Garnison’s Church, the symbolic site used by the Nazis to crown their rise to power on March 21, 1933. Here the
Reichspresident and military figure Paul Von Hindenburg shook Hitler’s hand, ceremonially uniting the German military and
     National Socialism.

  • Holländisches Viertel, the charming quarter of the city is unique in Europe with its 150 houses built of red bricks in Dutch style.
Commissioned by King Frederick Wilhelm I, the ‘soldier king,’ the quarter was intended to attract Dutch craftsmen, it has since
     become Potsdam’s multicultural center.

  • Glienicke Bridge, connecting Berlin with Potsdam over the Havel River, the bridge was used for three high-profile ‘spy swaps’
during the Cold War, including the February 1962 trade made by the West for Captain Francis Gary Powers, the American pilot of
the U2 spy plan shot down over the Soviet Union
