Following a punishing five years during which the Nazi war machine killed over 10 million Soviet
soldiers and over 11 million civilians, the Red Army reached the banks of the Oder River in early
April, 1945, 50 kilometers east of Berlin. 1.3 million Soviet Soldiers faced a crippled Nazi defense,
consisting substantially of old men, teenagers and women of the Volkssturm (Home Guard). They
descended upon Berlin for what Marshal Georgy K. Zukhov called their “final hour of vengeance.”

This tour of the Battle of Berlin follows the crucial details of the battle, including troop movements,
the master strategies of leading generals, andthe experiences of infantry soldiers and Berlin
civilians. Recommended tour duration: 3-4 hours.
